Premium Australian winery Nepenthe has re-introduced a selection of cool climate wines from its Altitude and Pinnacle collections to the UK seven years after distribution stalled.
Hailing from the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills, the Altitude collection comprises a Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and a Pinot Noir (rrp: £12.99), while the boutique Pinnacle duo consists of a Sauvignon Bland and a Shiraz - both sourced from the most premium vineyards and made with Adelaide Hills fruit (rrp: £19.99).
The re-introduction of Nepenthe to the UK, which follows distribution stalling with the closing of around two-thirds of all Oddbins stores in 2010, formed part of Nepenthe’s strategy to “champion the Adelaide Hills on the international stage”, said its winemaker, James Evers - former McGuigan senior winemaker (Nepenthe and McGuigan share parent company Australian Vintage).
“We craft wines that reflect the provenance of our home in the cool climate, high altitude Adelaide Hills - an inspiring viticultural region, with the diverse microclimates bringing complexity to our wines,” he said, adding the wines offered “elegant aromatics, balanced acidity and palate texture”.
Founded in 1994, Nepenthe sources its fruit from three estate vineyards located in Balhannah, Charleston and Hahndorf and supplement supply with established, trusted growers in a bid to ensure consistent high quality year on year.
Evers said there were plans to show the varietal diversity of the region further down the line by releasing oaked aged Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer, Rosé, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo.
“We’ve got oldest the Tempranillo vines in the Adelaide Hills. It would make easy transition to the UK,” he said.
