Wine Cellar is forced into administration

Published:  02 October, 2009

The family owned company, Wine Cellar has gone into administration with the loss of 320 jobs.

Based in the North West and North East of England, Wine Cellar owns 170 off licence and convenience stores under the banner of Booze Buster, Simply Drinks and Simply Food and Drinks.

Bill Dawson and Daniel Butters of Deloitte, the business advisory firm were appointed joint administrators on September 30, and announced the sale of the stock and 109 of the retail outlets to Walsall-based drinks distributor EFB Retail.

The remaining 61 stores have not been sold and 320 employees have been made redundant as a result.

Partner in the reorganisation services practice at Deloitte, Bill Dawson said the company had attempted to find an investor or buyer but the company's financial position became untenable.

He added: "We are pleased to announce the sale of the majority of the Wine Cellar outlets. The sale includes 109 stores, which will secure around 640 jobs at these outlets and around 60 staff from head office.

"The administrators are not in a position to continue trading the remaining 61 stores which have not been sold. These stores have been closed and unfortunately around 320 employees have been made redundant. We will be working closely with the redundancy payments Office to provide support for these staff.
