Irish merchant launches trainee scheme

A wine merchant has launched an initiative to find a trainee, Alan Sugar style.

James Nicholson Wine Merchant in Ireland is offering a nine-month training scheme to one lucky person. Training will include sponsorship through the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) intermediate and advanced certificates, with further opportunities to complete the WSET Diploma, if offered a long-term position.

The scheme has been designed to include a mix of activities from working in the vineyards of one of its European producers during a vintage, to placements in Crossgar and Dublin.

James Nicholson said: "We hope this scheme will provide the chosen candidate with a sound grounding in many features of the industry including: sales skills; merchandising; purchasing and shipping; warehousing; delivery; stocktaking and wine appreciation, including an understanding of vineyard and winery operations.

"The successful candidate does not have to have any prior wine knowledge. We are looking for a positive attitude and "can-do" approach more than retail experience, academic qualifications or wine knowledge."
