Red wine grapes and pomace left behind after winemaking may help to prevent tooth decay, new research shows.
A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggests that specific polyphenols which, are chemicals found in grape seeds and skins can prevent bacteria that leads to tooth decay.
Hyun Koo, assistant professor of dentistry at the Rochester Medical Center, which conducted the study with Cornell University, said the hope now is to isolate the key compounds within pomace that render bacteria harmless, perhaps by developing a new kind of mouthwash.
