Tokyo is awarded most Michelin stars of any city

Published:  23 July, 2008

Tokyo has the most Michelin stars of any city in the world with the just-released first guide by the French company to the Japanese capital.

A total of 191 stars for Tokyo is almost twice that of Paris with its 97, and nearly four times London's array.

Eight restaurants were given the highest, three star status - London has just one three-star restaurant in the form of Gordon Ramsay's eponymous venue. There were 25 accorded two stars, and 117 gained one star in Tokyo.

According to Michelin guide director Jean-Luc Naret: "it is thanks to the incomparable quality of the products and cooking techniques used, and to the heritage and culinary traditions, that the Tokyo guide has given stars to all these restaurants".

Two-thirds of the restaurants awarded stars served Japanese food, the rest are mainly French in style.

The three star restaurants are: Hamadaya, Jol Rubuchon, Kanda, Koju, L'Osier, Quintessence, Sushi Mizutani and Sukiyabashi Jiro.
