The newly elected president of Vinisud, Fabrice Rieu, is to launch a Shanghai Vinisud in 2013, to alternate with the French event in Montpellier.

Rieu, who has succeeded former president Bernard de Roquette-Buisson, said he wishes to alternate with the French event in Montpellier (February 24-26, 2014), "just as Vinexpo alternates between Bordeaux and Hong Kong".

He said the objective is to recruit new buyers and to open up to new markets.

Elected unanimously by the 26 attending members, Rieu took charge of the Vinisud board of directors on May 21.

Roussillon wine merchant and former president of the Roussillon Wines Joint Trades Council,  he was behind the Bacchus events in New York and Shanghai.

He will rely on the skills of the Joint Trades Councils, of the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Council and of all those managers concerned with developing the Vinisud exhibition, in collaboration with Adhesion Group, and will lend his experience of international business, particularly the Asian market, in which he has been active for some years.

Rieu said: "Since its creation in 1994, Vinisud's record has become ever more impressive. In February, it hosted 1,664 exhibitors and 32,880 visitors, 27% of whom were international visitors. The Mediterranean wines and spirits exhibition features among the top four of the world's wine shows."

Vinisud Asia will take place in Shanghai on February 26, 27 and 28, 2013.
