Chinese artist Xu Lei has illustrated Chateau Mouton Rothschild's 2008 label, carrying on the tradition of having an artist design the label every year since 1945.

His drawing for Mouton involves the classic theme of the château's First Growth emblem the ram, perched on top of a rock.

The artist says the ram 'symbolises the role of a great wine as a link between people and cultures, from one hemisphere to the  other of "planet wine"'.

Mouton describes its 2008 vintage as having "a dense, very dark colour. On the nose, it offers a fine array of aromas
in which red fruit, blackberry and blackcurrant mingle harmoniously with notes of violet and cedarwood".

Previous label illustrations have been done by Dali, Miró, Chagall, Picasso, Warhol and Bacon, among others.

Owner Baroness Philippine de Rothschild chooses the artists and hey are given free rein over the design, though most are attracted by certain themes such as the vine, the pleasure of drinking or the ram.

The artists receive no fee for their work but are given cases of Mouton Rothschild, including "their" vintage.
