NEDERBURG AUCTION BIGGEST EVER

Published:  23 July, 2008

The organisers of the Nederburg Auction claim there are 17 new participants in the line-up of 84 of the country's top producers, at the 28th auction in Paarl on 12-13 April. This represents a 20% increase in participation, making the auction more representative of the industry and bringing the total number of wines on auction to 157. The spectrum has been further widened with the introduction of a pre-release wine category from newcomers Fort Simon, Havana Hills, Mount Rozier, Fleur du Cap and Philip Jordaan. Other newcomers are Dieu Donn, Goede Hoop, Jacobsdal, Knorhoek, Le Riche and Slaley, and the Pinotage Association with its first Absa Top Ten Pinotage collection. Longridge, Old Vines and Rijk's Private Cellar represent the white newcomers, while Pongrcz and JC Le Roux each offers a sparkling wine. As usual, 104 red wines lead the field, followed by 38 white, 11 fortified and four sparkling. Reds include a Petit Verdot; a new wine from Nederburg on auction for the first time; 39 Cabernet Sauvignons; 24 red blends; 15 Shiraz/Syrah wines; 14 Pinotages; seven Merlots; three Cabernet Francs and a Pinot Noir. Whites include 15 Chardonnays; four Chenin Blancs; three Sauvignon Blancs; three Semillonsand a Pinot Blanc. There are also two Special Late Harvest and ten Noble Late Harvest wines, including the famous Nederburg Edelkeur, the wine which, to a large extent, inspired the auction.
