BORDEAUX CLASS STRUGGLE

Published:  23 July, 2008

A quarter of the 420 Mdoc crus bourgeois risk losing this status in the imminent classification, says the Syndicat des Crus Bourgeois. Some 470 chteaux have applied for the classification (now re-assessed every ten years on the St-Emilion model), which is controlled by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture, the regional committee of the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine, and the Fdration des Grands Vins de Bordeaux. The 18-strong jury will reach a verdict on the basis of tastings and documents submitted by the chteaux. Successful applicants will be classified as cru bourgeois, cru bourgeois suprieur and cru bourgeois exceptionnel. The results will be announced at Vinexpo in June 2003.
