Jago sets out vision

After a month in his new job, Tesco's new BWS director Dan Jago has promised a faster, more proactive' relationship with both suppliers and consumers in an attempt to make Tesco the world's best wine retailer within three years'.

Jago - who stressed he was still finding his feet at Tesco and had no firm plans to make immediate changes to a business that is performing very well' - told Harpers: I have a very clear vision... I want the customer to say "I have no need to go anywhere else for my wine", no matter what level of wine they want to buy.'

He stressed the importance of the Tesco Wine Club (with more than half a million members); the dotcom business (which accounts for around half of all wine sold in the UK online); and the fine wine selection (available in around 200 stores and online) as central to this. It's about having the structure in place where customers can source wine that they want through us rather than us having to have the product in store.' He also refused to rule out offering fine wine en primeur sales.

Jago promised a number of new projects in the coming year. What I've done is brought a whole series of thought processes to the team, who are now sitting around with me and discussing what might work and what might not work.' And he added that having been a supplier myself, it was clear to me that we need to be more proactive and slightly faster in talking to our suppliers, so I'm putting changes in place.'

No major changes to the discount strategy are planned - everyone knows the commercial benefits of promotional activity' - and he also defended the recent introduction of Tesco Finest lines designed to be periodically offered at half price: If you look at the way they are branded and merchandised, they are clearly a different part of the Finest range... our customers have said they like being introduced to wines they wouldn't normally drink through strong offers.'

A full interview with Dan Jago will appear in next week's Harpers.
