Shiraz-Viognier blends come full circle

Published:  23 July, 2008

The recent trend for co-fermenting red Shiraz grapes with white Viognier has come full circle - from France to Australia and back again - with the launch of Guy Anderson Wines' new brand from the south of France.
Le Freak, part of the Thierry and Guy stable of wines, utilises Syrah from a 20-year-old vineyard near Carcassone and co-ferments it with a small portion of Viognier from a
nearby vineyard.

Guy Anderson commented:

The French winemaking tradition of adding a small splash of aromatic Viognier grapes to a bold Syrah is well established. But Cte-Rtie [where the practice originates] is prohibitively

expensive for the average consumer, so it was left to the Australians to make this wine style more accessible.

Thierry Boudinaud, my French partner, and I asked each other why the Australians should have all the fun and set out to revive the French tradition of co-fermentation, but this time at a more affordable price.'

The wine, a Vin de Pays d'Oc, will be sold for 5.99 through the Co-op.
