Malbec du Monde

Published:  23 July, 2008

A French co-op used Vinexpo to launch what it describes as the first international Malbec brand in the world' - Terreo, Malbec du Monde.

Conscious of the growing awareness of Malbec, specifically from Argentina, Sud-Ouest Millsimes (SOM), which claims to be the third largest winery in south-west France, has responded with Terreo, which will feature Malbecs from Argentina and Chile as well as France.

SOM, which also claims to be the number one Cahors producer and belongs to Cave des Ctes d'Olt, a leading producer of Cahors wines, has formed a company called the International Malbec Wine Company.

At Vinexpo, only the French Malbec, which is a Vin de Pays du Lot, and a ros were on show, but Ferydoun Hoffman, the company's export manager said he expected the wines to retail for approximately 4.99.

Hoffman told Harpers that the company was sourcing the Argentinian Malbec from Mendoza but declined to say from whom. Hoffman added that the company had not yet decided on a source from Chile but it was looking at the 2005 vintage in both countries.

The company stated in its sales literature: Our intentions are to use our ancestral know-how and our Malbec culture in order to react against the economic difficulties in the Cahors appellation and in the French wine industry.'
