Languedoc sub-region Fitou is holding its first trade tasting in the capital next week, to show off the vast improvement in wines from the area.

The event, hosted by sommelier Baptiste Ross-Bonneau, is open to the trade from 10am to 5pm on Monday, September 12.

The tasting will present the 12 best expressions of its terroir to show the "dynamism and innovation" coming from the area.

"I remember tasting Fitou in early 2000 and finding the wines generally heavier and rustic, lacking finesse or terroir character," said Ross-Bonneau.

"However, modern Fitou is a totally different story: softer, fresher, rounder wines with an approachability that was unheard of in the past."

Located in the South of France, Fitou has undergone a dramatic transformation in quality over the past decade.

A selection of 12 of the best wines from the appellation, handpicked by a panel of Languedoc wine experts, will be available for sampling.

Highlights include Adrienne 2014, a cuvee from Domaine Lerys, the 2013 vintage of Hommage from the Mont-Tauch wine growers and 2013 Château des Erles, one of the region's most celebrated wines.

Born into a family of wine growers near Avignon, Ross-Bonneau studied Spanish at university, before starting an apprenticeship at the sommelier school in Avignon.

A passionate advocate of the Languedoc, Ross-Bonneau currently works as head wine steward in the Michelin-starred restaurant of Hôtel de la Cité, dividing his time between tasting, teaching and serving.

The inaugural Fitou wine trade tasting will be held in 68 and Boston near to Tottenham Court Road and Covent Garden.
