Unwins buyer Rob Hart hailed the Philips Newman concept a great success' last week, with suppliers queuing up to get their wines on the central table'. Hart added that the average transaction value in the new-format store, in the six weeks since opening, was 45% higher than the same period last year. You can sell expensive wine if you let people taste it first,' he said. We put a 9.99 white Ctes du Rhne on the table a few weeks ago and we sold three dozen in a week, compared to almost nothing normally.' Unwins unveiled 45 new wines last week at its summer tasting. New listings include a host of wines from Spain and New Zealand, and from a joint venture in the Languedoc with Osborne & Lynch: The Rebel (a red and white at 4.99) and The Renegade (a red and white at 5.99).
