The Independent Complaints Panel, which rules on complaints about irresponsible alcohol marketing, is looking to appoint a new chairman.

The senior position will oversee a panel of eight independent members, who decide whether the name, packaging or promotion of an alcoholic drink is in breach of the Portman Group Code of Practice responsibility rules.

Sir Richard Tilt, former director general of the prison service, steps down at the end of December after a six-year term.  Previous post holders were Laurence Shurman, the former banking ombudsman, and Lord Condon, former commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

Henry Ashworth, chief executive of the Portman Group, said: "This role is fundamental to the effective and respected operation of the self-regulatory system that governs the responsible alcohol marketing in the UK."

The post is being advertised nationally and closes on July 16. An honorarium of £12k per annum is payable. Candidates must be independent from the drinks industry.
