Tesco's Wine by the Case website exceeds expectations

Tesco's Wine by the Case website, which this Easter increased its fine wine range from 200 to 300 wines, is "exceeding expectations",  according to manager Nick Juby.

Sales of fine wine from the New World are proving to be particular popular, he said, with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc currently the best-selling variety. The success of New World wines could be down to younger people not having preconceived ideas of what regions are 'classic', Juby believes.

The offer of mixed wine cases also lessens the risk associated with buying unfamiliar wines and enables consumers to experiment with different styles, he added.

"We find that for many of our core customers price isn't the thing that stops them buying wine, it's a nervousness, a concern. They want to feel comfortable and don't want to make a expensive mistake," he said.

Tesco revealed a number of additions to its Wine by the Case, which lists 1,400 wines in total,  including exclusive deals Dandelion Vineyards Lion's Tooth of Mclaren Vale Shiraz/Riesling 2008 (£144 for case of 12) and Chukker 1 Torrontes 2010 from Bodegas Escorihuela (£60 case of six).
