The Waipara wine region to the north of Christchurch in New Zealand has been largely unaffected by the earthquake which devastated the area, leaving at least 75 dead earlier this week.

New Zealand Winegrowers UK director David Cox, said the group was still trying to establish whether the North Canterbury wine region had escaped harm.

"There is still quite a bit of uncertainty regarding the extent to the damage and devastation. All efforts are focused on the any rescue of trapped individuals and offering assistance to those who have suffered as well as restoring the basic infrastructure," said Cox.

He told Harpers that initial reports from one of our New Zealand Winegrowers Board members, Gywn Williams, from Waipara, showed "no injuries and minimal damage to buildings and wineries".

More than 300 people are still missing following Tuesday's earthqquake, which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, but caused extensive damage due to its shallow depth ? the epicentre was just three miles from the surface.
It is the country's worst natural disaster in 80 years when an earthquake in the North Island city of Napier killed 256.
