French wine specialist Nicolas is planning expansion in London, and has appointed Gilberts Evans to seek out new sites as well as handle rent reviews and lease negotiations.

Philippe Scodellaro, Nicolas' head of sales, said: "Following the sale of our stores outside the M25, it has always been our intention to look for potential stores within our target area of Greater London. We believe there is still scope to expand the Nicolas brand within London."

The last remaining Nicolas store outside London, Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street outlet, has now transferred to Spirited Wine, headed by former Nicolas operations director Benoit Thovenin, which bought the other 18 sites.

Scodellaro also confirmed that there are three London stores with low profitability earmarked for closure or relocation. Its East Putney branch closed on January 9.
