QUERCIABELLA'S NEW CHIANTI

Published:  23 July, 2008

By Nicolas Belfrage MW

Sebastiano Castiglioni of Chianti Classico's Querciabella has launched the estate's first new wine for 16 years, a Merlot/ Sangiovese blend called Palafreno. Cynics, convinced that it would set a new record for Tuscan launch prices, were pleasantly surprised to learn that its ex-cellars price (E16) is half that of Camartina, Querciabella's flagship SuperTuscan. Castiglioni combined the launch near Milan with his annual fun-tasting, this year consisting of 13 consecutive vintages of Klein Constantia's Vin de Constance (1986-1998), which was followed by a choice of 12 of 90 South African wines shipped for the occasion.
