Spanish bar group Camino plans two new sites

The London-based Spanish bar group Camino is planning to open two new venues in 2011.

Richard Bigg, managing director of the Cantaloupe Group which operates Camino, told Harpers Wine & Spirit that he was hoping to agree terms shortly on one Camino site, and is also seeking a second new site.

There are already two Camino bars, one at King's Cross (Cruz del Rey) and a second at Canary Wharf (Puerto del Canario). In March 2010 Cantaloupe opened Bar Pepito, a specialist sherry bar. This 30-cover "authentically decorated" venue is opposite Camino at King's Cross.
Bigg said: "I'm so passionate about sherry as a drinks category. I think it's shedding it's fusty old-fashioned image. It's actually super cool. We even take our staff out to Jerez to learn about it."

The bars open from around midday to midnight during the week, with extended opening at the weekend.

Bigg said the biggest wines were still Riojas, "we have some pretty powerful Riojas on our list, starting at £22, or you can get a slightly cheaper but comparable Tempranillo from Navarra". Galician Albarino and Goddello varietals are also popular, he added.

The menu offers typical Spanish fare, though ingredients are sourced locally, apart from the traditional jamones from Jabugo and Teruel in Spain.
