TEQUILA DELEGATION VISITS UK

Published:  23 July, 2008

The first-ever Tequila producer trade delegation arrived in Britain last week, seeking to increase the knowledge of the product among the trade and consumers, with initiatives to pursue protection of the Tequila Appellation of Origin' in Europe. These included a Tequila Declaration' from the President of Mexico regarding the defence and promotion of Tequila' at the opening of the Aztec Art Exhibition, held at the Royal Academy of Art. The delegation also visited the Scotch Whisky Association, to discuss what the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT) could learn from the successful moves made to protect Scotch Whisky from foreign imitators. Javier Arroyo, president of the CRT, said: We recently stopped 200,000 litres of bogus Tequila from arriving in the EU. Although the shipment was made in Mexico it was not made in the denomination, and not allowed to be called Tequila.' He added, From 1 January 2003, we will have customs tariffs written specifically for the importation of Tequila in Europe. This will be a new resource for the protection of the guarantee of origin and quality.'
