Organisers of the 30th London International Wine Fair and Distil, Brintex, has reported a successful event, even though visitor numbers were down by 1%.

The final visitor attendance figure stood at 13,693 which compares to the 2009 figures of 13,893.

There was a welcome rise from visitors attending from overseas, with figures up 1% from 3,133 in 2009, to 3,170 this year, despite travel problems arising from the volcanic ash cloud.

The number of oveseas visitors equated to 23% of the total amount.

James Murray, event director said he was given extremely positive feedback from across the board and  reported high levels of business being carried out over the three days.

"It has been so pleasing to see the wine trade getting back on its feet after a difficult 18 months," said Murray. "It's extraordinary to have welcomed more international visitors this year, despite the travel problems that many experienced, and our UK audience has remained very solid in the face of a shrinking market and declining numbers of retailers.

"Throughout the three days, exhibitors have reported an impressive attendance from key individuals from the UK and overseas."
