Cheesman quits Sainsbury's

Published:  23 July, 2008

Allan Cheesman, Sainsbury's long-standing and high-profile director of wine, has announced that he is leaving the company at the end of October. A pioneer in the world of supermarket wine, Cheesman, 52, is credited with playing a large part in the development of modern supermarket offerings. He told Harpers he would still help the company as a part-time consultant for the beers, wines and spirits department, and plans to start his own consultancy. Sir Peter Davis, group chief executive of Sainsbury's, said: For much of his time at the company, Allan has been at the forefront of our beers, wines and spirits business and has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the most able and influential players in the wine trade. He has also made a major contribution to establishing Sainsbury's current high standing in this important trading area.' Cheesman has spent 30 years with Sainsbury's, almost his entire career (apart from one brief period with BRL Hardy). He leaves on a high after Sainsbury's scooped the Supermarket Wine Merchant of 2002 at the International Wine Challenge.
