Dublin gets responsible

Published:  23 July, 2008

A global conference entitled Alcohol, Ethics & Society', co-sponsored by The International Center for Alcohol Policies (ICAP) and the National College of Ireland (NCI), is to take place in Dublin next month. The three-day (16-18 October) conference's aim is to explore the issues surrounding alcohol policy, including the responsibilities facing the industry globally and locally; who decides what responsible drinking' means; where the rights of the consumer and those of the Government begin; and who has the responsibility to educate the public on the good' and bad' aspects of drinking. ICAP will use the event to release the results of the first-ever global survey of health policy-makers, which organisers say will shed light on nations' top alcohol policy priorities and pressing concerns'. Also released are the findings of an earlier conference, which dealt with the marketing and promotion of alcohol to young people. The objective of the conference is to find a common language that will resonate in public and private sectors - in the beverage alcohol industry, among public health advocates and in government circles - to promote responsible lifestyles in developed and emerging countries,' said Marcus Grant, president of ICAP, which provides policy advice to governments and researchers worldwide and publishes reports on alcohol issues. The venue for the conference is the NCI's new campus in Dublin's International Financial Services Center.
