A survey has found that almost four in 10 wine drinkers will be spending more on wine this Christmas.
A poll of 549 wine consumers, carried out by newly launched research company DoILikeIt, found that 39% would be increasing their spend this year while just 4% said they would be cutting back.
Despite the proliferation of wine promotions, 57% of respondents said they will buy the same amount of wine as they did last year, and spend the same amount of money on it.
Fewer than 2% said that they would take advantage of the drop in Champagne prices to buy a lot more bottles, or to stock up on cases of fizz for a wedding or celebration next year. Fifty-seven per cent said they would either save money or spend the same amount as they did last year.
Of the remaining 41%, just under half say that will buy a few more bottles of their favourite brand of Champagne - at a lower price - with a slightly small number exploiting the bargains by trying a fizz they had previously have thought too expensive.
