SAWB STRUCTURE UNVEILED

Published:  23 July, 2008

The new structure of the South African Wine and Brandy Company (SAWB) has been formalised with the nomination of its directors. Danie de Wet (who is representing the farmers), Izak Visagie (cellars), Nosey Pieterse (labour) and Distell managing director Jan Scannell (trade) will form the executive committee. Scannell will act as SAWB chairman until an independent chairperson is chosen from outside the stakeholder groups. He will then remain as chairman of the executive committee. The next step will be to appoint a chief executive officer. The CEO will run a small full-time office to handle the management and administration of various functional units, at this stage identified as market development; research and technological development; human resources development; business intelligence services; and socio-economic empowerment. Funding of the SAWB office will be shared by stakeholder groups. For more on South Africa, see Harpers' supplement which is published on 27 September.
