Granada wine gets official recognition
Granada has joined the ranks of Spanish Vinos de Calidad - the third quality tier in the country's wine hierarchy.
The new Vino de Calidad de Granada appellation allows white wine to be made from Vijiriego, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Moscatel de Alejandría, Moscatel de Grano Menudo or Morisca, Pedro Ximenez, Palomino, Baladí Verdejo and Torrontés.
The recommended varieties of red grapes are Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Monastrell, Romé and Petit Verdot.
The appellation rules also allow the production of sparkling wine.
The planting density must be between 1,300-5,000 vines/ha. The minimum natural alcohol content is 11% abv for whites, 12% abv for reds and 10% abv for sparkling wine.
Granada is situated near the Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalusia in southern Spain.
