Fine wine merchants Berry Bros. & Rudd has announced it smashed all its trading records at the weekend with a knock-down sale at its Basingstoke-based factory shop.

According to the firm, on Saturday the shop broke all previous Christmas records.

Berrys' Fine Wine Weekend saw bottles of 1986 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild reduced from £851.45 to £425.00 and 1995 Vega Sicilia, Unico down from £240.00 to £145.00.

Its own label United Kingdom Cuvée Champagne was the weekend's best-seller at a 25% discount.

The company says the factory outlet's turnover is up 19% on this time last year and is selling 30% more cases. Orders are also up by 17%.

Alun Griffiths MW, wine director at Berry Bros. & Rudd, said: "This is tremendously positive and is a great illustration of how we are combating the recession through aggressive retailing with special offers, even of very expensive wines as in this Fine Wine Weekend, working well to attract customers."

Griffiths said Berrys' London shop in St James's Street is also seeing an increase in orders and case volumes on the same period last year.
