Fine wine market continues to boom

The latest Christie's fine wine auction in London achieved sales of more than £1.3 million, as the market continues to perform well despite the recession.

The Finest and Rarest Wine sale sold 95% by lot and 97% by value, with the top item a 1989 Château Haut-Brion, 60 bottles of which raised £37,950.

Chris Munro, director of the London wine department, said: "This was another very strong result for wine in London, as International demand continues to outstrip the supply of fine wine.

"We saw competitive bidding on virtually every lot with over 250 registered bidders. Blue chip Bordeaux continues to dominate the top ten and we were also pleased with the resurgence in demand for classic Burgundy from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Highlights included £37,950 paid for 60 bottles of Château Haut-Brion 1989, 12 bottles of Château Lafite-Rothschild 1982 again breaking £20,000 per case and 6 bottles of Romanée-Conti 1994 making an impressive £18,400."
