Wine recovery in 2011 says research firm

The recovery in UK wines sales will take until 2011 according to a new report from market research company Mintel.

It says volumes will increase by 4% to 1.2 billion litres by 2014, but the reversal of fortunes from last year's 2% fall in volumes will be slow.

Mintel senior drinks analyst Jonny Forsyth said the wine industry needed to get drinkers on board at an earlier age to secure the long-term success of the category.

"Once people join the wine club they tend to stay in it for life," said Forsyth. "The problem for the industry is getting people to join earlier.

"Despite being big drinkers generally, 25-34s are below average drinkers of wine.

"With wine seeing its first decline in volume and value for some time in 2008, it is increasingly important to target younger drinkers effectively, and 25 to 34s are forecast to see double-digit growth over the next five years."

Mintel forecasts further 40% growth in rosé sales over the next five years.
