Published:  12 May, 2009

One of the world's biggest showcases for wine and spirit producers gets underway today at London Dockland's Excel exhibition centre.

Months in the planning, the London International Wine Fair and Distil will see 1,300 exhibitors from across the world showcase their products to buyer, suppliers, sommeliers, importers, merchants, the media and the consumer.

This year it is expected that 25,000 wines will be presented.

A wide range of seminars will examine the position of wines and spirits in the UK and world markets.

A Harpers Wine and Spirit Debate on Wednesday at 11.30am will examine how to make money in recession. The magazine will also host a debate on the role of journalists in the industry on Wednesday in the South Gallery Rooms 11 and 12 between 12:30pm and 1.30pm.

The LIWF top 100 tasting, chosen by The Wine Gang, will this year focus on indigenous varieties that "reveal the true essence of each country".

Wine Intelligence will be hosting a seminar looking at winning against the credit crunch in the on-trade. (9.45am, Thursday May 14, South Gallery Rooms). There will also be an on-trade lounge, with a wine list clinic and tailored on-trade tasting.

A host of other events of interest to people involved in the trade will take place over the three days.
