SAB Miller sees beer sales dip

Published:  16 April, 2009

SAB Miller's beer volumes dropped by 1% in the first three months of 2009, but remained 2% up over the full-year to the end of March.

The brewing giant - whose brands include Snow, Miller, Peroni and Pilsner Urquell - said economic conditions deteriorated in the second half and consumer demand had fallen in most markets.

The group's financial performance was hit by unfavourable currency movements but remained in line with expectations.

Lager volumes in Europe were level with the previous year, though there was growth in Poland and Romania.

Full-year volumes were down 7% in Russia reflecting the destocking of wholesaler inventories.

US domestic sales were down 0.4% in the nine months to March, with slight growth in the final quarter.

Volumes were up 5% in Africa, while Chinese brewing arm CR Snow delivered a 4% rise in lager sales.
