Booming rosé sales helped wine giant E. & J. Gallo to record positive growth in 2008 despite tough trading conditions.

The producer announced UK sales increased 2.4% in value and 0.4% in volume to more than 5.5 million nine-litre cases (Nielsen, MAT 27 December 2008).

Sales of rosé wine increased by 13.5% and it now accounts for 18% of all rosé sales in the UK.

The Barefoot range also boosted the company's performance, recording more than 50% growth in both volume and value in 2008.

Iain Newell, marketing director for E. & J. Gallo Winery Europe said: "2008 has proven to be a difficult year for the wine industry as a whole, however we have shown in 2008 that by building strong brands that meet customers' needs we can continue to expect further growth and continued success in 2009."

E. & J. Gallo sells more than 12 million cases of wine worldwide and has a 5% share of the UK off-trade market.
