Guinness glasses to display unit info

Published:  09 February, 2009

Guinness is to display alcohol unit information on half-a-million of its glasses.

The new glassware will display how many units are in a pint of Guinness (2.3) and is aimed at helping drinkers to stay within recommended Government guidelines.

Brewing giant Diageo, which controls the popular drink, is preparing to distribute 500,000 glasses bearing the unit information to pubs, bars and other retailers this month.

"As well as the new design detail marking the anniversary, the new 2.3 unit indicator is an industry first that will give people simple guidance on the number of units they consume," said Guinness marketing director John Roscoe.

"We know that not all alcohol is served in bespoke glasses like Guinness is, but if the glasses are effective it would be good to see units on glassware becoming more widespread. This is one way we can help people drink sensibly."

The new glasses are being launched in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the original 9,000 year lease on the St James' Gate Brewery by Arthur Guinness. The glasses feature a new "250" logo and "1759-2009" as a nod to the anniversary.
