Cash-strapped Irish consumers refuse to ditch wine habits

A poll carried out by an Irish wine merchant suggests that consumers are looking for better value wine purchases rather than ditching it altogether during the credit crunch.

Independent wine merchant JNwine.com polled the first 300 visitors to its new website to ask them if the credit crunch had forced them to reconsider their drinking habits.

Almost three-quarters (74%) said that while they had thought about buying less, they were more motivated to seek out better value than to ditch the habit altogether.

Only a quarter (26%) admitted that money woes had prompted a rethink over whether they purchased wine at all.

"There's no doubt that consumers have less to spend these days and many are turning their backs on the pubs, but few seem willing to give up the pleasure of enjoying a good bottle of well-priced wine at home," Chris Hill of JNwine.com said.

"Savvy wine lovers are shopping around a lot more, looking at new varieties, grapes and producers and seeing that there is fantastic value to be had."
