The hand-held device has six chemical sensors that can accurately measure acid, sugar and alcohol.
Each membrane has a different sensitivity to the chemical components that distinguish one grape variety from another and one wine vintage from the next.
The device is still in the early stages but researchers hope they will one day be able to make an automatic wine taster that is more reliable than the human palette.
Cecilia Jimenez-Jorquera and her team of scientists at the Barcelona Institute of Microelectronics invented the "electronic tongue".
Jimenez-Jorquera said the device could be trained to "taste" new varieties as required and "detect frauds committed regarding the vintage year of the wine, or the grape varieties used."
