NHS failing problem drinkers

Published:  23 July, 2008

The NHS is failing to provide services to help problem drinkers, a report has said.

Alcohol Concern recommends that trust's pooled substance misuse treatment budgets should include funding of alcohol treatment.

The DoH should also establish an optimal level of access for alcohol treatment in England and Wales. The current access level of one in 18 should be reduced to around one in seven, the report said.

The government should also "demand" local commissioners should match targets set for drug treatment to reduce waiting times for alcohol treatment.
