French winemaker buys up Japanese vineyard

Published:  23 July, 2008

Bernard Magrez has bought five hectares of vineyard in Japan on the mountainside slopes of Katsunuma.

The deal is a joint venture with Yuji Aruga - president of the Katsunuma Winery - and will see 12,000 bottles of a new wine Magrez-Aruga' produced each year.

Grown from Japan's indigenous Koshu grape, each hectare of Magrez-Aruga land will hold between 400 and 500 vines.

Magrez said the new development - which will add to his global portfolio of 35 vineyards - would "form part of our long term expansion plan in France and abroad".

The Japanese purchase was accompanied by a simultaneous acquisition of three hectares of vineyard in the Collioure appellation (South Roussillon).
