New Yorker pockets $1.7m from rare wines auction

Published:  23 July, 2008

V Cheryl Womack, a US entrepreneur and established wine collector, has sold off half of her collection for millions of dollars.

A Sotheby's auction, which took place in New York over the weekend, raised her $1.7m (0.83m) for the 4,775 bottles she auctioned off - representing half of her collection.

In total, the auction raised $3.96m (1.95m) which exceeded all estimates, reports Reuters.

Ahead of the sale Womack was quoted as saying: "I'm never going to drink all this stuff and this way I get to put it into the world where somebody else can enjoy it."

Two cases of Chateau Petrus 1990 were sold to US investors for $48,400 (24,000) each.
