The fifth annual Alcohol and Society Conference organised by MEAS took place in Dublin yesterday.
The EU Commission's director general for health and consumer protection, Robert Madelin, spoke on the theme of Working Together to Reduce Alcohol Related Harm'.
His talk covered how harmful and hazardous alcohol consumption is one of the main causes of premature death and avoidable disease in the EU.
Other speakers at the event included Rosemary Garth from the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland and Peter Cassells, the chairman of the sustaining progress special initiative on alcohol misuse.
Conference attendees heard that alcohol misuse costs Europe 125 billon each year.
