HERRICK'S NEW BUSINESS CLASS

Published:  23 July, 2008

Making Money in Wine' is the provocative title of a new one-week residential course to be launched by English wine business adviser James Herrick in May. The course will be held at La Bastide, a hotel in the heart of the Minervois, and will cover viticultural practice, winemaking, consumer trends, brand development, tasting and the financial aspects of the wine business. The course will have a formal structure,' said Herrick, but it will allow for tailored development to meet individuals' interests during the week, if necessary by providing subject options to individual participants.' The course, which is aimed at people who are already specialising in part of the industry and need to gain a broader picture and understanding of its complexities', will be restricted to 12 people and costs e8,450 (excluding VAT). This sum includes everything except travel to and from France. According to Herrick, the idea for the course came from the many people who have asked to learn about the experience of applying New World thinking to the Old World, and the realisation that with the flood of investment by the spirits companies, there are many senior people coming into the industry who would benefit from an intensive grounding, by listening to people who have done it rather than just taught it.' Herrick will lead the course, but will be joined by a number of as yet unnamed high-profile guest speakers' from the various disciplines. Course dates for 2002 are 5-10 May and 6-11 October.
