European medical chiefs to set up an anti-alcohol charter

Published:  23 July, 2008

Senior medical chiefs from the UK and across Europe are to meet tomorrow to agree and produce a charter that it hopes will form a springboard to "reduce the harm caused by alcohol to Europe".

A one-day conference is being held by the Royal College of Physicians where the latest research and evidence around the impact of alcohol on health will be discussed by an audience of European medical experts.

It plans to produce a Conference Charter "on what needs to be done for a co-ordinated response to reduce the harm caused by alcohol to Europe".

The conference comes in the same week that the 21-strong Alchol Health Alliance, led by the Royal College of Physicians, is thought to be officially launching its campaign to lobby the UK government for tougher action to be taken against alcohol.

In the publicity for tomorrow's event, to be held at the Royal College of Physicians in London, the organisers make clear they hope to be able to make as big an impact as the medical profession has in curbing tobacco with tobacco.

It states: "The purpose of this conference is to launch a co-ordinated European response by the medical profession to alert public and political opinion about the burden that alcohol places on European citizens and Europe as a whole and what should be done to reduce this burden."

invited speakers incluce Robert Maudlin, director general for health and consumer protection at the European Commission, Dr Vladimir Poznyak, of the World Health Organisation, Dr Richard Yoast, American Medical Association and a numbe of leading UK academic figures.
