Drinks industry challenges alcohol lobby group

Published:  23 July, 2008

The five main drinks industry trade associations have written to the Alcohol Health Alliance, a 21-strong health lobby group, calling on them to back up their allegations with hard facts.

Rob Hayward, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: "We are questioning some of the basic assumptions at the heart of this campaign, because we do not believe the evidence base supports the call for higher taxes, more regulation and health warnings. Indeed, our experience from around the world strongly suggests that the measures you are seeking carry considerable risk of exacerbating the situation."

The letter has been jointlly by the British Beer and Pub Association, The Wine and Spirit Trade Association, the Gin and Vodka Association, the National Association of Cider Makers and the Scottish Whisky Association.
