Sales record predicted for NZ wine exports

Published:  23 July, 2008

New Zealand wine exporters are predicting earnings of over $1m (3.68m) in three years.

The New Zealand Winegrowers trade body is predicting this rise will be in place by 2010, and it is claiming the figure will double by 2015.

This year's export sales of pinot gris are projected to rise by 140%, whilst export demand for merlot is set to increase by 65%.

To achieve this extra volume additional staff will need to be taken on, which cold lead to recruitment problems, with an industry labour shortage already reported in the Marlborough district.

New Zealand Winegrowers boss Philip Gregan has been quoted as saying that an extra 10,000 hectares of land would be needed for grape growing by 2011 to meet the projected demand.
