Seasonal change for Nederburg Auction

Published:  23 July, 2008

This year's Nederburg Auction in Paarl, South Africa, is taking place this week - the first time it has been held in the autumn (springtime locally).

The event, which will be held on Friday and Saturday (28-29), has been moved so that some of the 2007 vintages are ready to be tasted, and also so that winemakers are not too preoccupied with the harvest.

Nederburg, which is owned by Distell, has organised the auction since 1975, and this year's event will see wines ranging from a 1923 Vosne-Romane to a young Cabernet Sauvignon still in the barrel.

The auction also features a fashion show, and usually draws a number of South African celebrities. This year, footballer Mark Fish and cricketer Justin Kemp are due to attend.

Distell Europe's managing director, Gary Greenfield, said: "We have witnessed a rise in interest in South African wine in the UK in the past decade, and it events like this which illustrate the breadth and quality of what the Cape can offer."
