South Australian wine body put on hold

Published:  23 July, 2008

A region-wide body to lobby on behalf of grape growers in the south of Australia has been postponed until 2008.

The refusal by national government to allow a levy to be collected to fund the new organisation means growers will be without representation for another year.

Prime movers behind the new body are the South Australian Winegrape Growers council, which would have raised nearly half a million Australian dollars through the grower levy.

"This decision has devastated the grape growing sector in South Australia and of course that's 60 per cent of the national grape growing sector," said Council chairman Paul Clancy.
