BURGUNDY TASTING 2002

Published:  23 July, 2008

Forty-five Burgundy producers will be in London on 10 January to present a range of their wines to the UK wine trade. Burgundy Terroirs & Signatures' will concentrate on wines from 1999 and 2000, which benefited from near-perfect climatic conditions. A separate tasting of regional AOCs will present wines which account for 53% of Burgundy's total production. These wines represent the entry point to the region. In a bid to reinforce consumer confidence while raising visibility for the range, Burgundy producers and ngociants have focused their attention on regional appellations. Figures released by the BIVB show that after a year of stagnation in 1999/2000, export sales rose 7% in volume during 2000/01, to a total of 95 million bottles. The UK remains Burgundy's top customer, taking 28% of its exports. In 2000/01, Britain imported 27 million bottles, a 16% rise on the previous year.
