Record amount raised at Penfolds auction

Published:  23 July, 2008

The largest-ever auction of Penfolds wines has raised a record amount, with two rare sets of Grange selling for nearly 125,000.

The two sets of Grange, considered by many to be Australia's finest wine, containing vintages from 1951-2001, sold for AU$308,000 (124,500).

The auction, which was conducted online, featured more than 1,300 lots, including numerous vintages of St Henri, Magill Estate, and RWT.

A new record price was set for a single bottle of Grange, with one 1951 vintage selling for AU$51,000 (20,620), while a bottle of 2004 Penfolds Bin 60A fetched AU$15,972 (6,457).

Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said: "This was a strong auction comprising an outstanding collection of rare, experimental and back vintages from Penfolds.

"We are delighted with the results. They confirm that Penfolds maintains a strong presence among collectors and wine enthusiasts. Wine collectors globally have had a real opportunity to engage in the acquisition of Penfolds wines."
