Survey reveals mass ignorance over alcohol units
Three-quarters of UK wine drinkers do not know how units of alcohol a bottle of wine contains, according to a new survey.
Just 6% of consumers knew that a 12% abv, 750ml bottle of wine contains around nine units of alcohol - although a further 20% answered either eight or 10 units, which counted as a correct answer in the Vinitrac UK survey, conducted by Wine Intelligence.
More worryingly, more than half the 1,000 regular UK wine drinkers surveyed believe that a bottle of wine contains six or fewer units of alcohol.
However, six out of 10 respondents correctly answered that a pint of 4% beer contains two units of alcohol, and that most RTDs contain 1.5-2 units.
And more than 70% knew that a 125ml glass of wine contains 1.5 units.
The recommended daily alcohol intake for adult males is 3-4 units, and 2-3 units for adult females. This approximates to a third of a bottle of wine, or one 250ml "large glass" serving of wine in most pubs.
