Modus Vin, the holding company of Bordeaux ngociant CVBG Dourthe-Kressmann, has taken a 35-year lease on Chteau de Srame, one of the oldest and largest properties in Lzignan. The aim, according to Dourthe CEO Jean-Marie Chadronnier, is to produce a wine that will compare with the best in the Languedoc'. The restructuring of the estate's 200 hectares of vineyards, many of which are planted with old Carignan and Grenache vines, is already underway. Modus Vin will plant or replant between 100 and 160 hectares within ten years,' Chadronnier added. The new leaseholders will plant Merlot, Syrah and possibly Mourvdre, with the intention of producing mostly red wines. Some Viognier and Grenache Blanc, already planted, may be retained. Chadronnier told Harpers: We believe the Languedoc is one of the places in Europe where it is possible to make quality wines in conditions that are close, if not comparable, to the Southern Hemisphere.' Chadronnier plans to sell the wines as Corbires, Minervois and Vin de Pays d'Oc. Our goal is to make the best wines possible,' he said, as an appellation or vin de pays.' When fully converted the property will produce between 120,000 and 150,000 cases. The wines may or may not be sold under the Dourthe label.
